Last week, I had the honor of attending an online class called Demystifying Design for Foundation Paper Piecing offered by Dana E. Jones from danajonesquilts.com. It was an absolutely wonderful class, filled with new information, tips, tricks, and hands-on exercises. By the end of the 3-hour session, we were tasked with creating a Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) project based on an image. I chose an Italian Coffee Pot, which, with its geometric and angular shape, seemed like the perfect subject for an FPP design. In fact, it was so enjoyable that I decided to add a coffee cup to the design as well.

After sketching the pattern by hand, I used EQ8 design software to create the final pattern.

With many fabrics scattered around my studio, I easily found the various shades of gray needed to create a 3D effect in my project.

EQ8 is a great software, but it suggested numbering the pieces in a way that wasn’t very efficient, I did my own sections and numbering.

I was so excited about working this project, that my poor family had to have potstickers for dinner. But it was worth it!

I realy love this block, which came to be exactly 12″ square, just as I designed it, but after carefully examining it I noticed, that I made two mistakes.

The bottom of the cup was supposed to be “rounded” on both sides.

While I did a fairly good job placing the pattern on the lid as symmetrically as possible, thereโs one detail that didn’t turn out as expected: the knob on the lid is not centered. Itโs a small imperfection, but one that stands out when I look at the finished piece. Despite this, Iโm happy with the overall outcome of the project.
There is, however, one thing that I find a bit off โ the coffee cup appears to be floating in space. It doesnโt quite seem anchored or grounded in the design, which is something I might adjust in the future. Nevertheless, the project was a great learning experience, and Iโm proud of how it turned out, imperfections and all.
