The journey of mandala creation

Iโ€™m so excited to share with you one of my favourite crochet creationโ€”a mandala design that was born from my travels last year. As many of you know, I always crochet during my summer trips, finding a special joy in combining my love for design with the experiences I have while exploring new places. This time, my inspiration came from the vibrant culture and architecture of Romania and Moldova, my home countries I had the pleasure of visiting last year.

One of my travel traditions is to always pack a couple of cakes of Sultan Deluxe or Twister yarn from Hobbii, a brand Iโ€™ve come to love for its soft texture and vibrant color choices. It’s lightweight, portable, and surprisingly versatile for the kind of projects I like to work on. A single cake doesnโ€™t take up much room in my suitcase, but the generous yardage is more than enough for a mandala or a similar project that I can work on over the course of my 1 one or two weeks trip. Itโ€™s the perfect travel companion, and I always make sure to take my favorite 2.5mm crochet hook along for the ride.

On this trip, I chose Yellow Snapdragon (36) and Kilim beauty (51), and as soon as we boarded the plane to Bucharest, I was ready to get started. With a layover in Amsterdam, eighteen hours of uninterrupted crochet time โ€“ isnโ€™t it the perfect way to begin a new creative journey?

For this design, I began with the Yellow Snapdragon cake on the outside, and I deconstructed the Kilim Beauty cake, selecting each color placement with intention to ensure that the pattern remained clear and didnโ€™t get lost in the color transitions.

Such a pleasure to see my mandala design grow!

Enter the naming contest!

Creating new designs comes naturally to me, but one of the most challenging parts of developing a new pattern is coming up with the perfect name!

I need your help with naming my mandala, and Iโ€™m offering this pattern for FREE to the person who can help me find a unique name for this design.

Hereโ€™s how you can participate in the naming contest:

  1. Subscribe to my blog’s mailing list. If you are already subscribed – great!

2. Leave a comment below with your name suggestion.

Iโ€™ll announce the winner on January 31st in my facebook group Vio’s Crochet Club.

If your suggestion wasn’t chosen – donโ€™t worryโ€”everyone who participates in the contest will receive a special discount code on the purchase of this mandala pattern!

Good luck, and I canโ€™t wait to see your creative name ideas!

The Sultan’s eye, because 1) it looks like an eye, and 2) is a nod to your yarn

    Parisian Cupola

The design reminds me of the stunning dome in the Galeries Lafayette Haussman, Paris. Built Art Nouveau flowing to Art Dรฉco, the building features a “coupole” by the glass-maker Jacques Grรผber that has caused many cases of stiff neck among the thousands of tourists who visit the place each year, whether they came from abroad or the south of France… ask me how I know that! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. Violetta Vieux Avatar

Wow! You are right, my design dow looks like it! I should make a mandala inspired from this coupole. Do you live in Paris? I lived 3 years ay Rue Lafayette while I was studying at ESMOD, quite close to the Galleries.

No, I live in Perpignan, but my brother lives near Versailles so when I visit him I always devote one or two days to Paris. You were lucky to live close to the Galleries!!! If I lived there I’m afraid I would spend way too much time wandering in the store. I hope you enjoyed your 3 years in France ๐Ÿ™‚

I was thinking Daisy Dreaming might be a good fit. The name references both the character Daisy from the Art Deco-era novel The Great Gatsby, and the flower that looks much like the center of the mandala.

I would call it “Crystal Dome”. It is so reminiscent of one. Especially the glass dome at the central market of Valencia.

I would call it Chakra – it is a Sanskrit word used in yoga – here is what it means-Chakra (chak-rah) โ€“ A swirling wheel of light and energy in the body. Each chakra is associated with a specific color, emotion, and elements. The most common chakras are the root chakra, heart chakra, and third eye.
