Unlock the Secrets of Slanted Double Crochet Stitches

I created this design in order to make a video-tutorial that would combine overlay mosaic crochet basics, special stitches and color changing techniques. In this pattern I’ve used almost all combinations of slanted double crochet stitches, that create smooth diagonal lines on the surface of the crochet fabric.

For the full tutorial, downloadable chart and written instuctions, please purchase the pattern MY SWEETHEART.

This pattern is FREE with the purchase of the CUPIDON pattern.

This design consists of 3 patern motifs, that are also used in my CUPIDON blanket.

I made this sample using MALAGA yarn from Hobbii. This yarn has been discontinued, but can be replaced by Megaball, which is quite similar worsted weight yarn.

What is mosaic crochet?

Overlay mosaic crochet is a technique that involves creating intricate designs by working with two or more colors in a way that overlays one color on top of another. This method produces textured patterns with a mosaic-like appearance and is often used to make visually striking pieces such as blankets, shawls, and other crochet projects.

The technique typically uses double crochet or other taller stitches, which are overlaid on a row of single crochet stitches, forming a color design.

You begin by working a foundation row (or several rows) of single crochet stitches in a solid color, which serves as the background.

In subsequent rows, you introduce a second (or more) color(s) to crochet double or treble crochet stitches over the background color. These new stitches are placed in a way that only certain stitches in each row are covered, while others remain visible, creating the overlay effect and forming geometric shapes, motifs, or even intricate images.

Start with a foundation chain of the desired length or required by the pattern, and then work single crochet stitches into the back loop of each chain stitch. Yarn will be cut after each row is completed and each row will be started and ended with a Border Stitch (BS), which is a regular single crochet stitch worked through both lops of the Border Stitch below.

All single crochet (SC) stitches are worked into the back loop of the stitches in the previous row. Double crochet (DC) stitches are worked into the front loop of the stitches 2 rows below (corresponding stitch). Each row is worked with an alternate color yarn, one creating the nackground and the other creating the pattern / design.

To create diagonal lines, slanted DC are made into stitches that are shifted one or more stitches to the right or to the left from the corresponding stitch.

Changing color

It is also possible to work with multiple colors in the same row, this way creating colorful designs.

The yarn is changed and joined by drawing it through the last two loops of the last stitch made with the previous color.

The carried / unused yarn in enclosed into the SC stitches of the current row, and is left running behind the DC stitches. It will be picked up and enclosed into the single SC of the next row.
